Your Guide to the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta: St.Petersburg

It’s 2019! And we’re excited to begin our 5th year sponsoring the National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta Series with Sailing World. Our first regatta is in St.Petersburg, FL at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Racing is on February 15th – 17th. Sailors and spectators can look forward to a competitive race followed by festive parties Friday and Saturday night, supported by fellow NOOD sponsor’s Mount Gay Rum and Uinta Brewing. With 160 boats in various classes entered so far, (10 more than last year), this regatta promises some great action out on the water. For registration information visit yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm.

    HELLY HANSEN JUNIOR CREW

Keep an eye out for the Helly Hansen Junior Crew! Skipper Heather Kerns and a talented group of young sailors will put their skills to the test against the NOOD veterans in the J/70 class.

Heather Kerns is 15 years old and the Skipper of the J/70 Junior Crew. She grew up sailing in Tampa Bay on her parents 35 ft. sailboat and began racing at age 9. She raced at the Laser 4.7 World Championships in Kiel, Germany and is currently a Varsity skipper in a 420 on the Shorecrest Preparatory sailing team. Her mentors include her Opti coach, Corey Hall, and current coach Todd Fedyszyn.

Heidi Hicks is 15 years old and began racing Opti at age 9. At age 11, she was introduced to laser sailing which she considers to be “her first love. It was then that she started to push herself to compete at higher and higher levels with the support of her dad. She was accepted into the sailing program at Shorecrest Preparatory School and now races seven days a week. This is her third NOOD Regatta.

Emma Shakespeare is 15 years old and fulfills the role of main trimmer on the youth boat. She started sailing at age 9 because of her dad, who is a lifelong sailor in the St. Petersburg Yacht Club program. She considers him, along with current coach Todd Fedyszyn to be her biggest mentors.

Cam Delgado moved to St. Petersburg, FL in 2012 and after enrolling in a summer sailing program immediately fell in love with the sport. After that summer, he began racing competitively and now competes under coach Todd Fedyszyn who he considers to be his primary mentor.

Emily Allen is 14 years old and began sailing at age 6. She did sailing camps at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center until she eventually worked her way up to the racing team in 2013. She sailed Opti’s until transitioning to laser which she currently sails. This is her third NOOD Regatta.
