Fastest Man around the World: Thomas Coville

HH ambassador, Thomas Coville, shatters the world record, sailing around the world in a time of 49 days 3 hours 7 minutes and 38 seconds.

On Sunday, November 6, 2016, Thomas Coville embarked on his fifth world record attempt, sailing solo around the globe with no stop-overs or assistance. On the morning before he set sail, composed and determined for success, Thomas believed that this time would be the right one. After four previous record attempts, he was confident that his experience and perseverance would be in his favor for what lay ahead. The world-class sailor saw that the weather conditions were optimal for the first part of his journey, fueling his optimism for the challenge that lay ahead.

Thomas is no novice at setting records; among others, in 2008, he shattered the record for a solo crossing of the North Atlantic, and in 2016, he became the only sailor to have traveled over 700 miles in less than 24 hours.

‘The Helly Hansen team, is proud and humbled to have been able to work closely with Thomas over so many years’, said Erik Burbank, Helly Hansen CMO. ‘He is one of the most passionate, dedicated and demanding sailors on the planet – and what he has accomplished is truly amazing and inspiring. Helly Hansen exists to make gear that helps people stay and feel alive, and the trust Thomas places in us is something we work very hard to earn and maintain every day.’

Departure: November 6th at 2:49pm
Arrival: December 25th at 5:57pm
Distance: 28 400 NM (52 597 km)
Average speed: 24.09 knots (45km/h)
Ahead of previous record: 8 days 10 hours 26 minutes and 28 seconds faster than the old record, held by Francis Joyon (FRA).

Congratulations Thomas, you are officially the fastest man around the world! #FeelAlive
