Helene Næss, Marie Rønningen and Tiril Hartvedt Bue are the three sailors behind Saltlife – a project aimed at showcasing sailing as a sport, and displaying the three sailors’ journey as top female athletes. Through blogposts, pictures and videos they hope to engage more people in the sport and show what it takes to be among the best.

Helene and Marie sail an action packed boat called 49erfx, while Tiril sails a Laser Radial; a tactical and physically challenging boat. They have competed against the best in the world in Melbourne, Miami, Palma and Porto among other places and Tiril qualified and competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

    Helene Næss

Helene was born in the coastal town of Nøtterøy. Living on an island and surrounded by water, it was only natural for her to try out sailing, a sport she became passionate about at a young age and started competing at a national level. By the age of 12, she had already competed in several international regattas, winning the National Championship in the Optimist category and the European Cup in the 29er.

Nowadays, Helene is based in Oslo and apart from sailing she enjoys skiing, surfing, windsurfing and cruising along the beautiful Norwegian coastline.

    Marie Rønningen
Marie was born Tønsberg, a small town south of Oslo, Norway where she still lives today. She began her sailing career at the Tønsberg Sailing Association and to this day continues to train there, while also being a member of the Norwegian Sailing Team.  Her love and interest for sailing came from childhood, as she was part of an active sailing family who coached her closely into mastering the sport already at a young age.
These days Marie is travelling the world, training and competing in events around the globe. In the few breaks she gets, she enjoys spending time with friends and family and skiing in the winter.

    Tiril Hartvedt Bue
Tiril is based in Asker, Norway, where she grew up. She first took up sailing at a young age, after being inspired by her brother – an excellent sailor himself.

Today she travels the world with her Laser Radial dinghy, pursuing the goal of an Olympic gold medal, as well as and experiencing all the beautiful places the world has to offer. Her career highlight was winning the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia in 2011.

Apart from sailing, Tiril has a passion for winter sports and enjoys snowboarding and skiing during the down season.
