ANDY & MIA ARE EXPLORING THE WORLD’S OCEANS & LEADING HIGH-LEVEL SAILING EXPEDITIONS FROM THE ARTIC TO THE CARIBBEAN.
Andy Schell & Mia Karlsson come from opposite continents but share a passion for exploring the world under sail and sharing it with others.
Andy grew up around sailboats on the Chesapeake Bay. At age nine, his parents took him out of school to spend a winter exploring the Bahamas aboard ‘Sojourner,’ their 36-foot ketch, with his sister & two cats. He cut his teeth as pro sailor aboard the schooner ‘Woodwind’ in Annapolis, Maryland.
Mia grew up in the Swedish countryside, far from the ocean. She excelled at swimming as a teenager, competing on the national level in Sweden throughout high school, and traveled the world thereafter.
Andy & Mia met backpacking in New Zealand in 2006. Andy introduced Mia to sailing in a little 28-footer they chartered with fellow backpacker friends in the Marlboro Sounds region on the South Island of that spectacular country. They bought and refit their first boat, ‘Arcturus’, a 50-year-old, 35-foot classic yawl in 2008 and sailed her from the Chesapeake Bay to Sweden in 2011. Only a week after, they were married.
They recently teamed up to create ‘59º North,’ named after the latitude of Mia’s native Stockholm. They lead offshore sailing expeditions worldwide in their new boat ‘Isbjorn,’ a classic Swan 48. Their adventures take them across 10,000 ocean miles per year, so far sailing as far south as the Caribbean and as far north as Svalbard, where they’re headed in 2018.
