James Heim
Lives
Whistler, BC
Personal description
James Heim has quickly become an integral part of the Helly Hansen team putting down feature segments in MSP year after year. He’s become known for his big mountain charging but has plenty of solid jump footage in the bag this season.
James’ compact powerful style combined with a keen mountain sense and humble attitude makes him the personification of what Helly Hansen strives to be.
Q&A
How long have you been skiing and why did you start skiing?
I have been pretty much skiing my whole life. My parents put me on skis when I was 3. Most of my friends played hockey but my Dad didn't want to sit in an arena and wanted to instead ski everyday.
How did you get into this kind of skiing?
Growing up at Red Mountain I got to ski some pretty hard slopes right away and watch the old Export A Extreme comps and always really wanted to compete. My buddies and I also would watch all the videos and started filming our own around the mountain. Once I was 19 I was finally allowed in the Big Mountain comp at Red and placed second, then I said no more university and moved to Whistler.
You spend most of your time in the backcountry, how does a typical day go for you?
It usually starts out rolling out of bed at 6:00 AM then heading for gas, food and coffee. Most of the time we all meet there and head to whatever trailhead that we've decided to try for the day. Next is unloading the snowmobiles and if the weathers good just going for it to the alpine to find some skiing. If the day goes well we get some good lines in and after either go for beers or right to the couch. The skiing and the weather everyday are quite different so you never really know how the day will go until you get there.
Out of all the places you have traveled which is you favorite?
Everywhere I've traveled has something new but I spent the last two summers in Argentina and the people, food, skiing has been amazing. But I always love coming home to Whistler.
In your dream garage there is:
08 summit 800, 1 Ton Diesel(I guess that would be parked outside), Every tool I need to fix all of my own machines, a few bikes with and without engines, Chainsaw, Beer fridge and Stereo first I need to get a garage.
How do you pass the time in the off-season?
I am pretty busy the whole off-season which isn't that much for me these days. I have been coaching a freeride camp in Argentina for the last two summers and that is for about two months so I only really have had 3 months off skiing this year. In that time I try to mountain bike as much as possible but am still working a full time job as well.
What kind of job do you have?
I used to work at Earls, a restaurant in Whistler but now I have been working for a landscaping company in Squamish.
Besides Skiing, I'd rather be:
Biking, fishing or drinking beers with my buddies
Do you read or watch movies and which was your recent favorite?
I can read but that doesn't happen to often these days. I just watched transformers and I would recommend it for sure.
MacDonald's or Sushi?
Definitely not MacDonald's
