Desafío Mapfre, sporting Helly Hansen apparel and footwear, will start the record attempt from Palos de la Frontera in Huelva, Spain to San Salvador in the Bahamas.
The challenger, managed by Pedro Campos, includes several members from the Telefónica crew that took part in the last Volvo Ocean race, including Olympic gold medalist and skipper Iker Martínez. After sailing a preliminary 567 nm from Sanxenxo to Palos de la Frontera, making stops in Bayona, Lisbon and Cadiz along the way, the team is now in Cadiz, where they are waiting for optimum weather conditions to attempt to break the record.
In the current state of ‘yellow code’, they are likely to start within the next 24 hours. The voyage will take the team 3,150 nm across the Tropic of Cancer, to the island of Guanahaní, founded as San Salvador by Columbus, where the clock will be stopped. During the record attempt the team will be protected hed-to-toe by the Helly Hansen ocean racing collection.
